If you would like to improve your school, just check with President Obama. He pays $ 4.35 billion to schools in America to make some improvements. MSNBC explains that anywhere wanting to “improve schools and close the achievement gap” can join the “Race to the Top” program that is this education initiative. ”Race to the Top” has nine winners about to share the $ 3.4 billion says the U.S. Department of Education: The amounts going to Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Washington D.C. will be announced later on. New student assessment means will be created and a $ 350 million award will go to that.
‘Race to the Top’ winners aren’t the only reformers
The grant competition “Race to the Top” has inspired numerous states that need the money to raise the education bar. There were many moves for states to try and win “Race to the Top.” Two of these contain no cap on spending for charter schools and giving more accountability directives straight to the teachers. Round 2 of this was applied for by 35 states and the District of Columbia. Of course, there were in July 19 finalists which were selected. Right now, there are 46 states and also the District of Columbia that have participated in “Race to the Top”.
Teachers unions against along with state education leaders
“Race to the Top” hasn’t met with universal approval. ”Race to the Top” was a big concern, says MSNBC, because state officials didn’t want the government coming in and taking control over schools. Also, the correlation between teacher evaluations and student standardized performance wasn’t something teachers unions liked the idea of.
American changes that are needed
The overall outlook has been positive. The nation has strong opinions on “Race to the Top” which Democrats for Education Reform released a public statement about. The statement applauded the bold reform actions undertaken and expressed hope that under the president’s command, all groups involved in reform – from civil rights and child advocacy groups to local companies and other grassroots education reform collectives – would work in harmony with teachers unions to produce results that have been needed in America for numerous years.
